How to stop hating photos of yourself.
I came home from a fabulous family trip to Puerto Rico.
Skimming through the vacation photos I find a photo of myself that I despised. It wasn’t a flattering angle of my belly. Has that happened to you?
A wave of anxiety, embarrassment, and shame washed over me.
At that moment I paused and decided to change the narrative.
Here’s my process. Try it out and let me know how it goes!
Take a moment to reflect on what was happening during the photo. (I was looking out at the ocean while spending time with my loved ones. My teenage niece snapped the photo - which made me feel proud. Not all teenagers pay attention to adults!).
Remember how you felt when the photo was taken. (I was feeling the warm sun. I was in vacation mode, feeling handsome wearing my Italian shirt, and I was excited to explore with my family).
Close your eyes and return to that moment. Feel it all!
Now, imagine what it would be like for your current (critical) self to enter into that moment with all of the judgments you have toward the photo. What would you say to your current self? (I would say, back the fuck off me. I am just trying to have fun and enjoy myself. I don’t care - nor do I have time for your judgments!).
Send the photo love and gratitude, and move on!
